Worksite Safety and the Danger of Dropped Objects
Ensuring safety on the job site involves more than scanning the concrete underneath your feet. Fences, gates, and surveillance cameras can also help keep unauthorized intruders out. One element of worksite safety that often gets overlooked is the danger of dropped objects. Let’s learn more about it!
What Are Dropped Objects?
When it comes to worksite safety, you can’t afford to take anything lightly. Something that falls from a height due to its own properties, such as weight or gravity, counts as a dropped object. Even if no one actually “drops” it, the definition still applies. Anything that falls from a height, such as the top of a ladder or off of a scaffold, also counts as dropped objects. In this case, it could be due to an energy source. Hand tools such as hammers and drills fall into this category, as do helmets, oxygen tanks, and paint cans.
Potential Dangers Involved
Worksites such as construction zones are already dangerous due to the noise, the activity, and the number of workers who are present. In the oil and gas industry, there are several unique dangers presented by dropped objects. Areas around elevated platforms, cranes, vessels, forklifts, pipes, ladders, and scaffolding all count as problem areas.
Preventative Measures
Following proper safety precautions is the first step towards creating a safer working environment. Every site is unique and has its own types of hazards, to boot. Fire and electrical hazards might be more prominent on one job site, while on another you may have to worry about standing water or toxic fumes. Keep an eye on the weather to see what is in the forecast, since wind is unpredictable. Give all of your employees the proper training, especially in CPR if necessary. Maintain safety nets and tethers to prevent falls from a great height. Take the time to report any incidents, even if they seem insignificant; you never know what could happen next time. Reward employees who do an excellent job abiding by the protocols you implement, since positive reinforcement can be more powerful than negative reinforcement intended to improve morale. That wouldn’t be the right way to go.
