Photoluminescence
Photoluminescence is a form of illumination used in fire and life safety applications that requires no light source. It can be used to illuminate exit signs, stairs, methods of egress, and strips.
FireStop performs quality photoluminescence services at affordable prices and offers photoluminescence installation for fire and life safety applications throughout the Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Pennsylvania regions.
What is photoluminescence and why is it used?
Photoluminescence provides guidance in the dark by illuminating pathways and obstacles so that people can become oriented to their surroundings. It is not meant to provide a source of light, but rather glow in the dark to act as a marker in poorly lit spaces. Photoluminescence has long been used in the traffic, flight, and train industries to act as an aid in the case of evacuations to guide passengers to safety, but in recent years, it has found more widespread applications.
Photoluminescence is extruded and fused into the aluminum itself and then protected by clear coat. It provides an ongoing and efficient source of illumination for stairs, strips, and exit signs. Because they require no power source, the cost of installing photoluminescent products is minimal and a nearby ambient light source is the only maintenance requirement. Useful for a broad range of applications, FireStop can provide quality photoluminescence services to ensure the safety of your employees and clients.
Often overlooked by architects because it was not required previously, photoluminescence is now required by Maryland code as well as the International Building Code. In 46 states, any high rise building (that is, one over 75 feet), must have a marked egress from the building.
