What Are Some of the Most Expensive Concrete Structures in History?
We all know that concrete is one of the most used building materials worldwide. Homes may use wood or other materials to create their structures, but the use of concrete is just about universal. Concrete is an affordable material, which is why it’s used in some of the biggest building projects in history—costing billions of dollars for the largest projects out there.
We don’t recommend breaking the bank by going overboard with concrete when you don’t need to, but concrete has an obvious place in many construction jobs. It’s fun to see just how wild people have taken the material, though, which is why we’re presenting a list of some of the most expensive concrete construction jobs in history.
The Israeli Wall: $5 Billion Plus
You’ve likely heard of the Israeli barrier wall that began construction back in 2000. Due to regional conflict, it was hastily constructed at first but has been torn down, rebuilt, and expanded over the years to cover parts of Israel’s border. The project has already amassed a huge bill, and it’s still in progress, meaning it’s hard to say just how large the project will eventually be.
Boston’s Big Dig: $23 Billion
Building and maintaining US highways or interstates is a costly endeavor. What can cost even more? Overhauling an entire system, like they did around Boston. This involved rerouting major roads and even running the largest part of the system, Route I-92, beneath the city. Tunneling under such a massive city can cause some troubles but preserving architecture was also an important part of the Big Dig, leading to nearly a decade of delays and plenty of budgetary concerns to boot.
Osaka’s Kansai Airport: $29 Billion Plus
Creating an island sounds like an impossible feat but with enough money in your coffers, the job can be done. In Osaka Bay, that’s the case with the Kansai International Airport, which had to be designed to withstand regional weather conditions including earthquakes or tidal waves. Since its completion, that airport structure has been expanded several times. The island is also prone to sinking, meaning that supports needed to be added every once in a while that has helped add to its initial price.
The US Interstate System: Over $500 Billion
This is a unique case because there’s no clear completion date for the US interstate system. It continues to grow and, in turn, increase its price every year. It all started in 1956 when the US government decided to make civilian transportation easier. New routes are added annually, however, and that makes for a costly concrete project!
