In any setting that involves heavy-duty construction work, one of those tasks is going to include concrete core drilling. But how can the workers who need to complete this work do so more safely? You should always remember that safety is the most important goal for everyone on a construction site to strive for, so here is some advice on how to complete concrete core drilling tasks.

Ensuring Equipment Safety

PPE for Head, Face, and Eyes: Never underestimate the value of personal protective equipment or PPE. Before beginning any work near concrete, you should make sure that your head, face, and eyes are all adequately protected. Concrete core drilling is impossible without the necessary tools and equipment being kept in optimal condition. Watch out for debris and particulates which could easily strike you and get caught in your eyes or lungs. Protecting your face and your mouth is especially important to protect yourself from choking on the dust that flies up from the drill once it is turned on.

Protecting Your Hands: If you know ahead of time you are going to be drilling into concrete, make sure you have the proper hand protection. We suggest that you invest in leather or rubber gloves. If you are not supplied with these gloves by your employer, you might have to procure some for yourself. Concrete core drilling isn’t only going to be hard on your hands, but on your wrists and arms too. With that in mind, be sure to wear protective cuffs for your wrists and sleeves for your forearms.

Protecting Your Hearing: Concrete drills, jackhammers, and other such tools are bound to be extremely loud. Thus, protecting your hearing is beyond vital. So to ensure that your hearing is kept safe, use earplugs or earmuffs. Plus, these measures will help when drilling in cold weather.

Drilling More Safety

Strive for Precision: Precision is so important because you can avoid potential accidents from hitting something hidden under the concrete. Start the drill and drill into the location you have marked out for drilling, but only set the drill to a low, safe speed first. Make use of what is called a pilot hole: a second, smaller hole that can help calibrate the drill. Slowly speed up the drill and use more force to push the drill down into the concrete as needed.
