Finding Rain Damage in Your Concrete

Finding Rain Damage in Your Concrete

You might not think it is possible, but rain can damage concrete.

You might not think it is possible, but rain can damage concrete. Cement is incredibly durable, think about it – some of the structures the Romans built over 2,000 years are still standing! Ancient civilizations understood how to make things last, even if the forces of time and weather and physics would eventually cause everything to collapse. Here is a guide to how to do it as well.

Follow the Water

Storm drains and sewers are two essential parts of any concrete structure. Think about all the drains in your city. They serve a necessary purpose. If concrete gets flooded, then it is much more unstable than before. That’s not a reassuring thought for anyone who lives or works in those buildings. Anything that is shielded against water damage will last longer. Concrete that is exposed to rainwater for too long will start to crack and separate. Pitting and lifting are to other problems you don’t want to have to deal with, either.

Look for Cracks

The next step is to inspect your property for any signs of cracks. Even the best concrete will begin to wear down and decay. It’s just a fact of life. Resurfacing can undo some of the damage left behind by saltwater, but not all of it. Make sure you take the time to get your concrete surfaces repaired. Tripping hazards are something you should avoid at all costs. Preventative maintenance is your best defense against slips, trips, and falls in outdoor settings.

Look Around for Puddles

Puddles may seem harmless, but they are also the enemy. Acid rain and pollution are much more damaging than they might appear to the naked eye. Erosion can weaken the foundations of the building. No matter how hard your workers labored to cut through concrete and grind it down or drill to find out what was embedded in the core, all of that can be in vain if moisture damage is too extensive. If the foundations shift, there will be even more damage to the structure. Cracks in the walls and ceilings indicate the presence of standing water in the foundations.
